Edmund Ruffin Beckwith (1890-1949) was aNew York City lawyer. The collection includes papers accumulated by Edmund R.Beckwith while he was researching biographical information on his ancester, JohnWright Stanly (1742-1789), merchant and Revolutionary patriot of New Bern, N.C.Included are papers of John Beckwith (1785-1870), physician of Raleigh, N.C., andPetersburg, Va., and his wife, Margaret, daughter of J.W. Stanly; papers of HarveyStanly, Episcopal minister of New Bern and Elizabeth City, N.C., and SomersetCounty, Md., of his wife, Mary Ann, and of her father, C.R. Kinney (d. 1845), lawyerand legislator of Elizabeth City; scattered papers, chiefly typed transcripts andphotocopies, of other members of the Stanly family; and correspondence, 1924-1949,of E.R. Beckwith and family members and research assistants about J.W. Stanly andhis descendants.
